The job in plain terms

Revenue operations (RevOps) and sales operations teams design the machinery of selling. They split the market into territories, set quotas, build the forecast, run the CRM and sales tools, keep the data clean, design and calculate commission plans, and staff the deal desk that approves pricing and contract terms. Enablement, often in the same group, trains new sellers and keeps the team current on products, process and messaging. These roles rarely talk to customers, but every seller's day runs on what they build.

Where the week goes

  • Plan territories and quotas for the coming year with sales leadership and finance
  • Build and maintain dashboards and the weekly forecast that leaders use to call the quarter
  • Administer the CRM and connected tools, and fix the data and process problems that slow sellers down
  • Calculate commissions, answer comp plan questions and handle disputes with clear rules
  • Review non-standard deals on the deal desk: discounts, payment terms, contract changes
  • Design onboarding and training for new hires and certify sellers on new products and process

Three moments from the job

Rebalancing territories

Two West Coast territories have very different account potential, and one rep is far ahead of plan while the other is far behind. You score every account on size and fit, propose a new split that evens out potential, and model the effect on each rep's quota before leadership approves it.

A forecast that keeps missing

The team's commit forecast has missed by more than 10% three quarters in a row. You compare how long deals sit in each stage with how they closed, find that one stage is used inconsistently, rewrite its exit criteria with the sales managers and track forecast accuracy for the next two quarters.

Launching a new hire program

New AEs take too long to close a first deal. You design a four-week onboarding with product certification, recorded call reviews and a mock deal, and measure time to first deal for the next two cohorts.

Who does well in it

Analytical people who like building systems and fixing processes, and who want to work at the center of a sales team without carrying a quota. RevOps people come from finance, consulting, data analysis, CRM administration and from sales seats; enablement often hires former sellers and teachers.

You will probably like it if

  • You like turning messy data into a clear answer someone will act on
  • You enjoy designing rules and systems that many people use every day
  • You can say no to a senior seller with a reason they accept
  • You want to be close to sales without a quota of your own

Requirements on most postings

  • Strong spreadsheet and data skills; SQL and BI tools are common asks
  • Hands-on experience with a CRM, often Salesforce or HubSpot, and the tools around it
  • A bachelor's degree in business, economics, finance or a quantitative field for many roles
  • For enablement: experience selling, training or designing courses

How people get hired into it

  1. 1From finance or analytics: learn the sales funnel and the CRM data model, then build a pipeline or forecast analysis on real or sample data
  2. 2From a sales seat: volunteer to own a tool, a report or a process change for your team
  3. 3Earn a CRM administration credential; Salesforce's free Trailhead platform and HubSpot Academy both offer training
  4. 4Bring a work sample to interviews: a dashboard, a territory model or a commission calculation with clear assumptions
  5. 5Ask how the team is split between sales operations, revenue operations and enablement, and who it reports to

What outsiders get wrong

Myth: RevOps is just CRM administration.

Reality: The CRM is the tool, but the work covers planning, forecasting, compensation, pricing approvals and process design. Senior RevOps people help decide how the company sells.

Myth: Operations roles are a step away from sales careers.

Reality: Operations teaches how the whole revenue system works, and people move between operations, sales leadership, finance and strategy roles.

Myth: Enablement is only onboarding.

Reality: Onboarding is a large part, but enablement also covers ongoing training, product launches, call coaching programs and the content sellers use in deals.

Base, variable and OTE

Open RevOps postings that publish their pay sit mostly in $136k–$285k/yr right now. The middle figure is $171k/yr, read across 347 openings with a stated range. Most US postings state the base; where a posting gives OTE as well, its role page shows both.

Questions candidates ask

How is revenue operations measured?

On the health of the sales system: forecast accuracy, data quality, time to quota for new hires, deal desk turnaround and seller time spent selling. That last one is a real problem: Salesforce's survey of 7,775 sales professionals found reps spent only 28% of their week actually selling - Salesforce. Operations exists largely to win back the rest.

How is RevOps pay split?

Mostly salary, often with an annual bonus tied to company or team results rather than a commission on deals. Postings usually state a base range; check whether a bonus target is stated alongside it.

What does the RevOps interview look like?

Usually a take-home or live case: build a territory plan, find what is wrong with a forecast or design a commission plan from a set of goals, then present it. Expect questions on the CRM and tools you have run. The sales interview guide covers case rounds.

What should I check in a RevOps posting?

Which tools the team runs, whether the role is analytical, systems-focused or enablement, the size of the sales team it supports and who it reports to. There are 577 revenue operations and enablement roles on the board today.
