The job in plain terms

A sales engineer (also solutions engineer, solutions consultant, customer engineer or pre-sales architect) works beside account executives on deals that need technical depth. The AE owns the relationship and the commercial terms; the sales engineer owns the technical win: understanding the buyer's systems, showing how the product solves their problem, answering architecture and security questions and running proofs of concept. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the occupation as selling technology-intensive products through technical presentations and helping customers with requirements and installation.

Where the week goes

  • Run technical discovery: the buyer's current tools, data, integrations and the constraints that will decide the deal
  • Build and deliver demos tailored to each buyer's use case rather than a standard tour
  • Scope and run proofs of concept or trials, with success criteria agreed up front
  • Answer security questionnaires, architecture reviews and requests for proposal
  • Bring field feedback to product teams about what buyers ask for and where deals are lost
  • Support several AEs at once and help prioritize which deals need deep technical work

Three moments from the job

A demo rebuilt the night before

Discovery showed that the buyer's analysts care about one workflow: reconciling data from two systems. You rebuild the demo around that workflow with sample data that looks like theirs, cut the rest, and leave ten minutes for their questions, which turn into the agenda for the proof of concept.

A proof of concept with a deadline

The buyer wants to test the integration with their data warehouse in two weeks. You agree three success criteria in writing, set up the environment, hold two check-ins with their engineer and present the results to the evaluation committee with the AE.

The security review

Procurement sends a 200-question security questionnaire. You answer the standard questions from the library, work with your security team on the five unusual ones and join a call with the buyer's security lead to close the open items.

Who does well in it

People with technical depth who like explaining it and who enjoy the competition of a deal. Many sales engineers were software engineers, IT administrators, consultants, data analysts or product specialists before they moved to the revenue side; others come from customer success or support and grow their technical skills on the job.

You will probably like it if

  • You enjoy translating a technical capability into a business result someone else cares about
  • You are comfortable presenting live to a room of skeptical engineers
  • You like variety: many customers, many problems, short projects
  • You want part of your pay tied to wins without carrying the quota alone

Requirements on most postings

  • Technical background in the product's domain (software, cloud, data, security, networking or the industry it serves)
  • A bachelor's degree, often in engineering or a related field, for many roles
  • Strong presentation and writing skills
  • Willingness to travel for field roles

How people get hired into it

  1. 1From an engineering or IT job: take on customer-facing work such as escalations, integrations or internal demos to show you can explain your work
  2. 2Learn the product category deeply, including the competitors, so you can answer comparison questions honestly
  3. 3Build a short demo of a product you know well, designed around one buyer's problem, and record it as a work sample
  4. 4Read how deals are qualified (MEDDICC or similar) so you can speak the AE's language
  5. 5In interviews, ask how many AEs each sales engineer supports and how the variable pay is earned

What outsiders get wrong

Myth: Sales engineers just run demos.

Reality: The demo is the visible part. Discovery, solution design, proofs of concept and security reviews often decide the deal, and most of that happens off-stage.

Myth: You need to be a former software engineer.

Reality: Many sales engineers are, but people from IT, consulting, analytics, support and the buyer's own profession also succeed. What matters is enough depth to be trusted by the buyer's technical team.

Myth: Moving into sales engineering means leaving engineering for good.

Reality: Many people move between sales engineering, solutions architecture, product management and customer engineering. The seat builds a view of customers that is useful in all of them.

Base, variable and OTE

Open sales engineering postings that publish their pay sit mostly in $163k–$300k/yr right now. The middle figure is $195k/yr, read across 568 openings with a stated range. Most US postings state the base; where a posting gives OTE as well, its role page shows both.

Questions candidates ask

How is a sales engineer measured?

Usually on the revenue of the AEs or region they support, plus goals they control: technical wins, demo-to-opportunity conversion, proof-of-concept success and the quality of their CRM notes. The PreSales Collective suggests tying 50 to 60% of the variable to the group's revenue goal and the rest to such goals - PreSales Collective.

How is sales engineer pay split?

More base than an AE. The PreSales Collective names 80/20 as the most common ratio, with 70/30 and 90/10 also in use. Ask whether the variable is paid on team revenue, on individual goals or both, and whether accelerators apply above target.

What does the sales engineer interview look like?

Most loops include a technical discovery role-play and a demo you build and present, often of the company's own product after a few days of access, plus a technical deep-dive with an engineer. The sales interview guide covers how to prepare the demo round.

What should I check in a sales engineering posting?

The product area and the depth expected, the segment (enterprise roles mean longer evaluations and more travel), the ratio of sales engineers to AEs and whether pay is stated as base or OTE. There are 1,293 sales engineering openings on the board today.

Is the occupation growing?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted about 51,600 sales engineering jobs in 2025 and projects 3% growth from 2025 to 2035, with about 3,800 openings a year, mostly to replace people who leave the occupation - BLS. Its count covers the formal occupation; many solutions roles in software sit under other titles.
