Account executive job description: what the job is, what postings ask for and what it pays
Written by Yuma Heymans, Founder & CEO of SalesJobs.Now.
Yuma runs SalesJobs. Now out of San Francisco. Recruiting is familiar ground: Yuma also co-founded HeroHunt.ai, a platform that uses AI to find and reach candidates.
An account executive owns the sale: they turn a qualified prospect into a signed customer, from the first discovery call to the contract, and carry a quota for the revenue they close. This guide describes the job as real postings describe it: what account executives do, what the postings ask for, what the seat pays, and a job description a hiring team can adapt. Every figure comes from open account executive roles on this board, read from employers' own hiring systems.
On 2 November 2026 this board had 9,291 open account executive roles open to US candidates, with a median posted pay of $127,500 a year; 993 of them had requirement lines read from the posting itself, the sample for the requirements below. Pay figures are the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale (base or on-target earnings, as the posting states it), one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged. The account executive jobs page lists every open seat.

1. What an account executive does
- Runs the sales cycle. Discovery calls to learn the buyer's problem, demonstrations, proposals, negotiation and the close. Postings call this "full-cycle" selling when the account executive also finds part of their own pipeline.
- Builds pipeline. Works the leads that sales development reps book and prospects for more, by email, phone and events.
- Forecasts. Keeps the deals and their stages current in the company's CRM and commits a forecast to the sales manager each month or quarter.
- Works with the team. Brings in a sales engineer for the technical part of a deal, leadership for the largest ones, and hands the signed customer to account management or customer success.
- Carries a quota. Most account executive pay plans split between a base salary and commission on the revenue closed against that quota; the guide What is OTE explains how.
Account executive seats are cut by the size of the customer: small business and mid-market seats run many shorter deals, and enterprise and strategic seats run fewer, larger and longer ones.
2. What postings ask for
The share of the 993 US account executive postings whose leading requirement lines name each:
| Requirement | Share of postings |
|---|---|
| A number of years of experience | 77% |
| A record against quota or targets | 37% |
| Software or SaaS selling | 34% |
| Enterprise customers or complex deals | 33% |
| Closing or full-cycle selling | 27% |
| A degree | 22% |
| Technical knowledge (cloud, data, security, APIs) | 19% |
| Travel | 19% |
| Living in or near a city or territory | 17% |
| Experience in one industry | 13% |
| Prospecting and building new business | 11% |
| A driver's license | 10% |
| A sales methodology (MEDDICC, Challenger and the like) | 3% |
These are the first lines each posting leads with, so a requirement further down the posting is undercounted; a named CRM, for one, leads only 6% of them. What stands out is how often a posting asks for proof: years, and a number against quota.
3. How many years postings ask for
| Years named | Share of postings that name years |
|---|---|
| One or less | 4% |
| Two to three | 26% |
| Four to five | 29% |
| Six to eight | 24% |
| Nine or more | 17% |
The median is five years. A posting asking for one year or less is rare, which is why most account executives start as sales development reps; the SDR vs BDR and How to get into tech sales guides cover that step.
4. What the seat pays
| Account executive seat, US | Median posted pay | Middle half |
|---|---|---|
| Every account executive role | $127,500 | $82,500 to $180,000 |
| Titled small business, mid-market or commercial | $139,050 | $95,488 to $178,813 |
| Titled enterprise or strategic | $188,625 | $150,000 to $300,000 |
The guide Account executive salary breaks the pay down by industry, city and company.
5. A job description to adapt
A posting that states the segment, the deal size, the quota and the pay attracts the candidates who fit and turns away those who do not. A starting point:
Account Executive, [segment]
The role. You will sell [product] to [buyer: title and company size] in [territory]. You own your deals from discovery to signature, working leads from our sales development team and building your own pipeline, with a sales engineer beside you on technical evaluations.
What you will do. Run discovery and demonstrations; build and present proposals; negotiate and close; keep your pipeline and forecast current in [CRM]; hand new customers to [account management or customer success].
What we ask for. [N] years selling [product category] to [buyer], with a record against quota you can show; experience with deals of [typical deal size] and sales cycles of [length].
Pay. Base [range], on-target earnings [range] at a [split] base to variable split, paid [monthly or quarterly] on [bookings or revenue], with a quota of [amount] and [ramp terms] while you ramp.
Fifteen US jurisdictions require a pay range in the posting itself; the guide Which sales jobs show their pay lists them, and Sales compensation benchmarks shows what comparable seats post.
The guide How to hire an account executive covers the rest of the hire: defining the seat, pricing it against the market, the pay plan and an interview loop that tests the deals the seat will run.
6. How these figures were counted
- The roles: every open account executive role on this board on 2 November 2026 open to US candidates, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 9,291 roles.
- The requirements: the leading requirement lines read from 993 of those postings (about three lines each); a requirement counts when a line names it.
- The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged, and the median across the US postings. "Up to" figures are left out.
