A customer success manager makes sure customers get what they paid for: they onboard new customers, drive adoption of the product, watch each account's health and work the renewal, so that customers stay and buy more. At many software companies it sits beside sales, measured on retention and often on expansion. This guide describes the job as real postings describe it: what customer success managers do, what postings ask for, what the seat pays, and a job description a hiring team can adapt.

On 2 November 2026 this board had 962 open customer success roles open to US candidates, with a median posted pay of $142,500 a year; 197 of them had requirement lines read from the posting itself, the sample for the requirements below. Pay figures are the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale (base or on-target earnings, as the posting states it), one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged. The customer success jobs page lists every open seat.

1. What a customer success manager does

  • Onboards. Takes over a customer at signature and leads the kickoff and the plan to get them using the product.
  • Drives adoption. Runs training and regular reviews, and shows each customer the results they are getting.
  • Watches account health. Tracks usage, support issues and relationships for signs of risk, and acts before a customer decides to leave.
  • Owns or supports the renewal. At some companies the customer success manager runs the renewal and finds expansion; at others they hand both to an account manager.
  • Is the customer's voice inside. Brings product feedback and escalations to the teams that can act on them.

The guide Account manager vs customer success manager draws the line between the two seats, which varies by company.

2. What postings ask for

The share of the 197 US customer success postings whose leading requirement lines name each:

RequirementShare of postings
A number of years of experience83%
Customer success, account management or other customer-facing experience78%
Software or SaaS36%
Technical knowledge (cloud, data, security, APIs)34%
Enterprise customers28%
A degree16%
Onboarding, implementation or adoption12%
Renewals, retention or expansion11%

A CRM or customer success tool (Salesforce, Gainsight and the like)9%

Customer success postings ask for customer-facing experience and technical comfort more than for a sales record, and name a degree less often than any other seat on this board.

3. How many years postings ask for

The median is five years.

257 of the 962 US roles (27%) were posted as remote, one of the highest shares of any sales seat; the remote customer success jobs page lists them, and the guide Customer success manager salary breaks the pay down further.

5. A job description to adapt

A posting that states the size of the book, how success is measured and who owns the renewal attracts the managers who fit. A starting point:

Customer Success Manager, [segment]

The role. You will own [number] customers with [annual revenue] in recurring revenue, from onboarding to renewal, so that they adopt [product] and stay.

What you will do. Lead onboarding and adoption plans; run regular business reviews; track account health and act on risk; [own the renewal and find expansion, or work them with the account manager]; bring customer feedback to product.

What we ask for. [N] years in customer success or account management with [type of customer], comfort with [technical area], and a record of retention you can show.

Pay. Base [range], on-target earnings [range], variable paid on [gross retention, net revenue retention or renewals].

Fifteen US jurisdictions require a pay range in the posting itself; the guide Which sales jobs show their pay lists them.

The guide How to hire a customer success manager covers the rest of the hire: the outcome the seat owns, pricing it, the profile and an interview loop.

6. How these figures were counted

  • The roles: every open customer success role on this board on 2 November 2026 open to US candidates, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 962 roles.
  • The requirements: the leading requirement lines read from 197 of those postings (about three lines each); a requirement counts when a line names it.
  • The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged, and the median across the US postings. "Up to" figures are left out.
