Account manager job description: what account managers do, what postings ask for and what the seat pays
Written by Yuma Heymans, Founder & CEO of SalesJobs.Now.
Yuma runs SalesJobs. Now out of San Francisco. Recruiting is familiar ground: Yuma also co-founded HeroHunt.ai, a platform that uses AI to find and reach candidates.
An account manager keeps and grows the customers a company already has: they renew contracts, sell more to the same accounts, and are the customer's person at the company once the first deal is signed. The title also means something different at drug companies, where "specialty account manager" is a field rep calling on prescribers. This guide describes both as real postings describe them: what account managers do, what postings ask for, what the seat pays, and a job description a hiring team can adapt.
On 2 November 2026 this board had 1,964 open account management roles open to US candidates, with a median posted pay of $135,000 a year; 335 of them had requirement lines read from the posting itself (218 outside drug companies and 117 at them), the sample for the requirements below. Pay figures are the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale (base or on-target earnings, as the posting states it), one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged. The account management jobs page lists every open seat.

1. What an account manager does
- Owns a book of accounts. A set of existing customers, assigned by size, region or industry, whose revenue the account manager is measured on.
- Renews and grows. Runs renewals, sells more seats, products or services to the same customers, and often carries a quota for that growth.
- Is the customer's person. Holds regular business reviews, handles escalations and brings in support, product or leadership when a customer needs them.
- Spots risk early. Watches usage and relationships for signs a customer may leave, and works with customer success on the accounts at risk.
Account managers sit between account executives, who win new customers, and customer success managers, who help customers get value from the product; the guides Account executive vs account manager and Account manager vs customer success manager draw the lines.
2. What postings ask for
| Requirement | Outside drug companies (218 postings) | At drug companies (117 postings) |
|---|---|---|
| A number of years of experience | 84% | 92% |
| Managing existing accounts, renewals or growth | 46% | 37% |
| A degree | 28% | 90% |
| Software or SaaS | 24% | 0% |
| Travel | 22% | 67% |
| A record against quota or targets | 18% | 2% |
| Enterprise or strategic accounts | 18% | 0% |
| A CRM (Salesforce and the like) | 15% | 0% |
| A driver's license | 12% | 3% |
| Clinical, medical or specialty experience | 12% | 91% |
The two columns describe two jobs. Outside drug companies, the account manager is a business-to-business seat that grows existing customers. At drug companies, a specialty or therapeutic account manager is a field seat in a territory, calling on prescribers and clinics, and almost every posting asks for a degree, travel and medical or specialty experience; the guide Pharmaceutical sales rep salary covers it.
3. How many years postings ask for
| Years named, outside drug companies | Share of postings that name years |
|---|---|
| One or less | 1% |
| Two to three | 27% |
| Four to five | 37% |
| Six to eight | 20% |
| Nine or more | 15% |
The median is five years outside drug companies and three at them.
4. What the seat pays
| Account management seat, US | Open roles | Median posted pay | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|
| Every account management role | 1,964 | $135,000 | $100,000 to $177,031 |
| Outside drug companies | 1,647 | $120,000 | $92,000 to $166,400 |
| At drug and biotech companies | 317 | $170,954 | $170,954 to $190,000 |
| Titled key, strategic, enterprise or global account manager | 314 | $172,320 | $125,250 to $205,384 |
The guide Account manager salary breaks the pay down by industry, city and company.
5. A job description to adapt
A posting that states the size of the book, how growth is measured and the pay attracts the account managers who fit. A starting point:
Account Manager, [segment or region]
The role. You will own a book of [number] existing customers, [describe them: size, industry or region], with [annual revenue] in recurring revenue, and grow it.
What you will do. Run renewals and expansions; hold business reviews with each account; spot accounts at risk and work them with customer success; keep accounts and forecasts current in [CRM].
What we ask for. [N] years managing B2B accounts in [market], with a record of renewal and growth you can show.
Pay. Base [range], on-target earnings [range] at a [split] split, variable paid on [renewal rate, net revenue retention or expansion bookings].
Fifteen US jurisdictions require a pay range in the posting itself; the guide Which sales jobs show their pay lists them.
The guide How to hire an account manager covers the rest of the hire: deciding what the seat owns, pricing it, what to verify and an interview loop.
6. How these figures were counted
- The roles: every open account management role on this board on 2 November 2026 open to US candidates, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 1,964 roles. Drug companies are employers whose field is drugs and biotech.
- The requirements: the leading requirement lines read from 335 of those postings (about three lines each); a requirement counts when a line names it.
- The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged, and the median across the US postings. "Up to" figures are left out.
