A US pharmaceutical sales job posting on this board typically states a salary of about $171,000 a year, and $180,000 once the two largest posters are set aside. Specialty and key account seats pay the most, primary care and associate seats the least, and almost every posting states the base salary alone, with a bonus on top. This guide breaks pharmaceutical sales pay down by seat, company and state, and explains how the bonus is earned.

On 1 November 2026 this board had 925 open sales roles at drug and biotech companies that US candidates could take, and 779 of them (84%) stated their pay, at 28 companies. Every figure below is the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the postings in each group. The pharmaceutical sales jobs page lists every open seat with today's pay, and its count and pay band are read again every hour.

1. The short answer

Measure, US pharmaceutical sales roles, 1 Nov 2026Posted pay per year
Median, every posting$170,954
Median without the two largest posters$180,000
Middle half, without the two largest posters$143,000 to $197,500
Specialty or therapeutic account manager (median)$170,954
District or regional sales manager (median)$203,740
Associate territory representative (median)$100,000

Two companies post a large share of the board's pharmaceutical roles, each at a single range: Amgen had 152 roles posting pay at a midpoint of $170,954 and Viatris 123 at $125,000. Setting them aside, the other 26 companies' 504 roles posting pay have a median of $180,000. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage of sales representatives of technical and scientific products, the group that includes pharmaceuticals, at $104,920 in May 2025, across every level and product - U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Open pharmaceutical seats post well above that because most of them today are specialty seats for experienced sellers.

2. Pay by seat

Seat, by the title's wordsUS roles posting payMedian posted pay
District, regional or area sales manager71$203,740
Account manager or account executive66$194,000
Key account manager39$187,600
Specialty or therapeutic account manager or specialist250$170,954
Sales representative144$125,000
Associate territory or sales representative26$100,000

The seats follow the industry's shift toward specialty medicines. Specialty and therapeutic account managers (the most common titles that day were Specialty Account Manager, Therapeutic Account Manager and Neuroscience Therapeutic Sales Specialist) call on a short list of specialists, the clinics and hospitals around them and the teams that manage patient access. Key account managers work with a hospital system, an integrated delivery network or a health plan, and are paid close to enterprise technology sellers. Sales representative titles, most of them Viatris's respiratory and pain territories, post about $125,000, and associate seats, the way in for people without a pharmaceutical record, about $100,000. The guide How to become a pharmaceutical sales rep explains each way in.

3. The companies that post the highest pay

The drug and biotech companies whose US sales postings had the highest median pay on 1 November 2026, among those with at least eight roles posting pay:

CompanyRoles posting payMedian posted pay
Amylyx9$239,000
Gilead13$235,850
Sanofi27$209,040
Mineralys Therapeutics27$197,500
Kiniksa Pharmaceuticals13$197,500
GSK41$194,000
Mirum Pharmaceuticals39$190,000
Sobi9$190,000
Merck10$183,250
Compass Pathways48$180,000

Several smaller biotech companies (Amylyx, Mineralys, Kiniksa, Mirum) post at or above the large drug makers; their seats usually ask for years of selling to the same specialists. The companies posting the most roles with pay were Amgen (152), Viatris (123), Axsome Therapeutics (74, median $146,250), IQVIA (59, $126,000, which staffs field teams for drug makers) and Compass Pathways (48). Every company page lists its open sales roles with their pay.

4. Pay by state

Among US pharmaceutical roles posting pay, by the state the posting names (at least 20 roles posting pay):

StateRoles posting payMedian posted pay
Massachusetts20$190,400
California87$170,954
Ohio29$170,954
Pennsylvania25$170,954
Illinois23$170,954
Florida25$162,000
Texas42$150,000

Pharmaceutical pay varies less by state than technology pay on this board: several large drug makers post one national range for a seat, Amgen among them, so the same figure appears in many states. Where states differ, it is mostly the mix of seats open there.

5. Base salary, bonus and what the posting leaves out

Unlike software postings, which usually state on-target earnings, pharmaceutical postings usually state the base salary. The variable part is an incentive bonus, often paid quarterly, on the territory's results against a goal: prescriptions written, sales, or market share for the medicine. Many postings describe the bonus, a company car or car allowance and the benefits, but price only the salary. So a posted $171,000 is the floor of what the seat pays in a year when the territory meets its goal, not the total.

What the bonus is measured on matters more than its size. A goal based on the territory's share of prescriptions rewards growth against competitors; one based on total sales also moves with things outside your control, such as a new insurer's coverage decision or a competitor's launch. Ask how the goal was set, how many territories reached it last year and how the bonus pays above it. The guide What is OTE explains incentive plans for every kind of sales seat.

6. How to judge an offer

  • Compare with the right seat. $150,000 base is above the median for a primary care representative and below it for a specialty account manager or a launch seat.
  • Ask for the bonus target. The target bonus at 100% of goal, how it is measured and how often it is paid.
  • Ask about the territory. How many prescribers, how much travel, how many of them see representatives in person, and how the product is covered by insurers there.
  • Ask about the car and expenses. A company car or allowance, fuel and phone are part of the pay.
  • For a contract seat, ask who employs you. Contract sales organizations staff field teams for drug makers; ask whether the seat can convert to the drug maker's own payroll.

7. How these figures were counted

  • The roles: every open sales role at a drug or biotech company on this board on 1 November 2026 that a US candidate could take, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 925 roles, 779 of them stating pay, at 28 companies. A company counts here by what it sells, so a contract sales organization that staffs pharmaceutical field teams counts as well.
  • The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the roles in each group. Seats come from the title's words, states from the posted location (a role naming several states counts in each). A group is shown when at least 20 roles in it post pay; a company when at least eight do.

These figures describe one day; the board's pages always show the current pay.
