A US account manager job posting on this board typically pays $135,200 a year, a little more than an account executive posting, and the middle half of postings run from $100,000 to $175,000. The surprise in that figure is where it comes from: drug makers' key account managers and enterprise seats at cloud and chip companies post the most, while account managers at distributors and consumer goods companies post far less. This guide breaks account manager pay down by product, segment, city and company, and explains how a book of customers is paid.
On 1 November 2026 this board had 2,152 open account management roles that US candidates could take, and 1,431 of them (66%) stated their pay. Every figure below is the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the postings in each group. Right now the board's account management roles post a median of $135k/yr, with a typical band of $100k/yr to $269k/yr, across 4,489 open roles in every country.

1. The short answer
| Measure, US account management roles, 1 Nov 2026 | Posted pay per year |
|---|---|
| Median | $135,200 |
| Middle half of postings | $100,000 to $175,000 |
| Bottom tenth below | $75,000 |
| Top tenth above | $220,000 |
| Key or strategic account manager (median) | $168,750 |
| At a pharmaceutical company (median) | $171,000 |
US account executive postings, for comparison, post a median of $125,000 ( Account executive salary). The account manager figure is higher not because keeping customers pays more than winning them, but because many open account management seats are senior ones: key account managers at drug makers, strategic and enterprise account managers at technology companies. The guide Account executive vs account manager explains how the two seats differ.
2. Pay by what the company sells
Pharmaceutical companies posted more account management roles with pay than any other market (304 US roles that day), most of them specialty, therapeutic and key account managers who sell one company's medicines to specialist physicians and the clinics, hospitals and health plans around them. Those seats pay close to enterprise technology seats. Account managers at consumer goods makers, who manage a retailer's buying team, and at device companies, who support surgeons and clinics in a territory, post the least. The guide How to become a pharmaceutical sales rep covers the drug industry's selling seats.
3. Pay by segment and level
| Seat | US roles posting pay | Median posted pay |
|---|---|---|
| Key, strategic, major or global account manager | 217 | $168,750 |
| Enterprise account manager | 292 | $167,250 |
| Mid-market account manager | 70 | $145,500 |
| Senior account manager (no segment named) | 215 | $137,500 |
| Account manager (no level named) | 961 | $130,000 |
| Associate or junior account manager | 38 | $96,000 |
The words before "account manager" say how large and how few the accounts are. A strategic or key account manager usually owns a handful of very large customers and the relationships across them, which pays about $40,000 more at the median than an account manager with no level in the title, who typically owns many smaller accounts.
4. Pay by city, and remote seats
Among US account management roles posting pay, by the metro the posting names:
| Metro | Roles posting pay | Median posted pay |
|---|---|---|
| San Francisco Bay Area | 126 | $179,000 |
| New York | 165 | $149,500 |
| Los Angeles | 48 | $147,500 |
| Seattle | 31 | $146,000 |
| Denver | 39 | $135,200 |
| Boston | 43 | $120,000 |
| Chicago | 61 | $114,000 |
Remote account management roles post less: a median of $121,800 for the 292 remote US roles posting pay, against $140,000 for office and territory seats, where the specialty pharmaceutical seats sit.
5. The companies that post the highest pay
The employers whose US account management postings had the highest median pay on 1 November 2026, among those with at least eight roles posting pay:
| Company | Roles posting pay | Median posted pay |
|---|---|---|
| Hewlett Packard Enterprise | 30 | $331,750 |
| Palo Alto Networks | 13 | $323,000 |
| NVIDIA | 20 | $290,250 |
| CareDx | 12 | $250,000 |
| Sanofi | 21 | $195,000 |
| GSK | 28 | $194,000 |
| Mirum Pharmaceuticals | 39 | $190,000 |
| Amgen | 117 | $171,000 |
Amgen posted the most account management roles with pay by far (117), followed by Axsome Therapeutics (66, median $130,000), Esri (59, $135,200) and Mirum Pharmaceuticals (39). Every company page lists its open sales roles with their pay.
6. How an account manager is paid
An account manager's pay leans on salary. CaptivateIQ's guide to on-target earnings puts account managers at roughly 20% variable and sales development reps at about 30% - CaptivateIQ, against close to half for account executives in The Bridge Group's 2024 study - The Bridge Group. The variable is usually earned on what the book of customers does: renewals on time, expansion revenue against a target, and often net revenue retention, the revenue the same customers bring this year compared with last year, after upgrades and losses.
That makes two things decide what you take home. The first is the book you inherit: a set of growing, healthy customers pays its expansion commission almost by itself, while a book with several unhappy accounts can cost you the renewal bonus whatever you do. The second is what counts as expansion: whether a price increase at renewal counts, whether a new product sold by an account executive into your customer credits you, and whether losses are netted against your gains. The guide What is OTE explains plan mechanics for every sales seat.
7. How to judge an offer
- Ask to see the book. How many accounts, how much revenue, how many renewals fall in your first two quarters, and which accounts are at risk.
- Ask how the variable is measured. Renewal rate, expansion, net revenue retention or a mix, and whether it is paid quarterly or annually.
- Compare with the right group. A $130,000 seat at a software company is at the median for account managers; the same figure for a key account manager at a drug maker is below its group.
- Ask who sells new products into your accounts. If an account executive or a specialist does, ask how the credit is split.
- For field seats, ask about travel. Key account seats at drug and device makers can mean days a week on the road; ask how the car, mileage and phone are paid.
8. How these figures were counted
- The roles: every open account management role on this board on 1 November 2026 that a US candidate could take, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 2,152 roles, 1,431 of them stating pay. The board sorts roles by what the job does, so key account managers, client partners and renewal managers count here.
- The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range, base or OTE as the posting states it, on a full year's scale, and the median across the roles in each group. A group is shown when at least 30 roles in it post pay; a company when at least eight do.
- Products come from what the employer sells, segments and levels from the title, and cities from the posted location, the same rules the board's market and city pages use.
These figures describe one day; the board's pages always show the current pay.
