How to hire a sales engineer: the offer, where the people come from, the pay plan and a technical interview loop

A sales engineer (often titled solutions engineer, solutions consultant or presales engineer) is the hardest sales seat to fill on price alone: the person has to be credible with a buyer's engineers and comfortable running a sales conversation, and most of the people who can do both already have a seat. On this board, US sales engineering postings state a median of $190,000 a year, 86% of them ask for a number of years, and 58% ask for presales experience specifically. This guide turns those figures into a hiring plan: what the offer has to beat, the profile and where it comes from, the pay plan, a technical interview loop and how long to expect.
The figures come from the 1,690 open sales engineering roles open to US candidates on this board on 2 November 2026, read from 1,480 employers' own hiring systems, and from the posting dates those systems state. Pay is the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, base or on-target earnings as the posting states it, one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged. Studies by other researchers are named and linked where they are used. Right now, across every country, the board's open sales engineering roles post a median of $190k/yr, with a typical band of $150k/yr to $302k/yr, across 3,993 open roles.

1. What the offer has to beat
| US sales engineering roles | Posted pay per year |
|---|---|
| Median | $190,000 |
| Middle half of postings | $150,000 to $235,000 |
From the board's 1 November 2026 breakdown (Sales engineer salary): cloud companies post a median of $219,500 for sales engineers, AI and data companies $210,350 and cybersecurity companies $189,031, and enterprise sales engineer titles $210,000. Remote and office seats pay the same, $187,500 and $187,000 at the median, so a remote seat widens the pool without lowering the price.
The seat is scarce relative to the closers it supports: the board held one open sales engineering role for every five or six open account executive roles on 2 November 2026. Candidates with presales experience usually have several conversations going, and 77% of sales engineering postings state their pay, more than any other sales seat, so an offer below the middle of the market is easy for them to see past.
2. The profile and where it comes from
What US sales engineering postings lead with, from the 359 whose leading requirement lines the board read:
| Requirement leading the posting | Share |
|---|---|
| A number of years of experience | 86% |
| Experience as a sales engineer, solutions consultant or in presales | 58% |
| Cloud, data, security, networking or APIs | 42% |
| Demonstrations, proofs of concept or technical evaluations | 33% |
| A technical degree or background | 26% |
| Travel | 20% |
Postings that name years mostly ask for four to eight (71% of them), and only 2% ask for one year or less. Asking for presales experience in more than half of postings narrows the pool to people already in the seat, which is where the competition for them is fiercest. Two other routes in are worth considering:
- Engineers and consultants who face customers: implementation and professional services engineers, technical account managers, support engineers and solution architects at partners already explain the product, or one like it, to buyers.
- Account executives with technical depth, for products where the sale turns on business value more than on configuration.
What to verify, whichever route the person comes from: that they can learn a prospect's environment quickly, build and run a demonstration that answers that prospect's question rather than every feature, and hold a room of skeptical engineers while keeping the deal moving with the account executive.
3. The pay plan
Sales engineers are paid mostly in base. The PreSales Collective names 80:20 as the most common split between base and variable - PreSales Collective. The variable is usually tied to the team's or the paired account executives' results rather than to an individual quota, because the sales engineer influences deals without owning them. State in the offer what the variable is paid on, whether it is pooled or individual, and how often it pays.
What is OTE explains how on-target earnings and splits work across sales seats.
4. The posting
A posting that describes the technical sale draws the people who can run it. State:
- The product and the buyer's environment: cloud platforms, data stack, security tools or APIs the person will work with, and who on the buyer's side they will face.
- The motion: how many account executives they support, the segment and deal size, and how much of the work is demonstrations, proofs of concept, security reviews or solution design.
- Travel: one posting in five names it; say how much.
- The pay and the path: base, variable and what it is paid on, and where the seat leads (a principal or architect track, or management).
The sales engineer job description guide has a template to adapt, and Which sales jobs show their pay lists the fifteen US jurisdictions that require a range in the posting.
5. The interview loop
A loop that tests the two halves of the job:
- A screen (30 to 45 minutes): the products and environments they have sold into, the deals they supported, and pay expectations against your range.
- A technical conversation with an engineer from your team: depth in the areas your buyers ask about, and how they find out what they do not know.
- A demonstration exercise: a short brief describing a fictional prospect and its problem, and a demonstration of your product (or one they know) built for that prospect, with your team playing the buyer's engineers and asking hard questions.
- A discovery and deal conversation with an account executive: how they would split the work on a deal, run a proof of concept to a decision, and handle a technical objection that threatens the sale.
The sales interview questions guide shows what candidates prepare for demonstration and presentation rounds.
6. How long the seat stays open, and what a search costs
The board sees how long open roles have been posted, not when a hire is made. On 1 November 2026 the median open US sales engineering role had been posted 41 days earlier, and 39% more than 60 days earlier (sales compensation benchmarks). An unfilled seat slows every deal that needs a technical win, so its cost shows up in the account executives' pipeline.
A contingency recruiter's fee is commonly 20% to 25% of first-year pay, which at the median posted pay is $38,000 to $47,500 for a sales engineer (Cost to hire a salesperson).
7. How these figures were counted
- The roles: every open sales engineering role on this board on 2 November 2026 that a US candidate could take, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 1,690 roles. The requirements come from the 359 whose leading requirement lines were read from the posting.
- The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range, base or on-target pay as the posting states it, on a full year's scale, one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged. Product, segment, remote and pay-stating figures are from 1 November 2026.
- The days since posting: from the posting date each careers system states, to 1 November 2026.
- What the board does not see: time to fill, offers and the pay finally agreed. Posted pay is what the market advertises, not what each hire was paid.
8. Quick answers
What should I pay a sales engineer? US sales engineering postings state a median of $190,000 a year, with the middle half between $150,000 and $235,000 (2 November 2026); cloud and AI companies post more.
What is the usual base to variable split for a sales engineer? 80:20 is the most common, according to the PreSales Collective, with the variable usually tied to team or paired account executive results.
Do sales engineers need presales experience? 58% of US sales engineering postings ask for it, but customer-facing engineers and consultants are a common and often overlooked route into the seat.
How long does it take to hire a sales engineer? The median open US sales engineering role on this board had been posted 41 days, and 39% more than 60 days.
Can a sales engineer be remote? Yes: remote and office seats post the same median pay, and remote seats were about a third of the US sales engineering roles posting pay on 1 November 2026.
