A sales engineer (also titled solutions engineer, solutions consultant or presales engineer) is the technical lead in a sale: they learn how a prospect's systems work, show how the product fits them, run the demonstrations and proofs of concept, and answer the technical questions that decide a deal, beside the account executive who owns it. This guide describes the job as real postings describe it: what sales engineers do, what postings ask for, what the seat pays, and a job description a hiring team can adapt.

On 2 November 2026 this board had 1,690 open sales engineering roles open to US candidates, with a median posted pay of $190,000 a year, among the highest of any sales seat; 359 of them had requirement lines read from the posting itself, the sample for the requirements below. Pay figures are the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale (base or on-target earnings, as the posting states it), one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged. The sales engineering jobs page lists every open seat.

1. What a sales engineer does

  • Discovers the technical need. Joins discovery calls to learn the prospect's systems, data and constraints, and what would make the product fit.
  • Demonstrates. Builds and runs demonstrations shaped to the prospect's use, often for several teams at the buyer.
  • Proves it. Scopes and runs proofs of concept and trials, setting the success criteria with the buyer and helping their engineers get there.
  • Answers the hard questions. Security reviews, architecture and integration questions, and the technical sections of proposals and questionnaires.
  • Carries the voice of the customer back. Tells product teams what prospects need and why deals are won or lost.

Sales engineers are usually paid a base salary with a smaller variable part than an account executive's, tied to the team's quota; the guide Sales engineer vs account executive compares the two seats.

2. What postings ask for

The share of the 359 US sales engineering postings whose leading requirement lines name each:

RequirementShare of postings
A number of years of experience86%
Experience as a sales engineer, solutions consultant or in presales58%
Cloud, data, security, networking or APIs42%
Demonstrations, proofs of concept or technical evaluations33%
A degree of any kind26%
A technical degree or background (computer science, engineering, coding)26%
Travel20%
Enterprise customers or complex deals19%
Software or SaaS17%
Experience in one industry12%

The pattern is clear: a sales engineer posting asks for presales experience and technical depth, the reverse of an account executive posting, where a record against quota leads (only 6% of sales engineering postings name quota).

3. How many years postings ask for

Years namedShare of postings that name years
One or less2%
Two to three18%
Four to five34%
Six to eight37%
Nine or more10%

The median is five years, and more than half of postings ask for that experience as a sales engineer, solutions consultant or in presales; the rest leave room for technical work elsewhere, such as engineering, consulting or implementation.

4. What the seat pays

Measure, US sales engineering rolesPosted pay per year
Median$190,000
Middle half of postings$150,000 to $235,000

The guide Sales engineer salary breaks the pay down by industry, city and company.

5. A job description to adapt

A posting that names the stack, the buyer and the split between demonstrations and proofs of concept attracts the engineers who fit. A starting point:

Sales Engineer, [segment or region]

The role. You will be the technical lead on deals with [buyer: team and company size], working beside our account executives from discovery to signature.

What you will do. Lead technical discovery; build and run demonstrations; scope and run proofs of concept against agreed success criteria; answer security, architecture and integration questions; feed what you learn to our product team.

What we ask for. [N] years in [engineering, consulting, implementation or presales] with [technologies]; the ability to explain a technical design to an executive and to an engineer in the same meeting.

Pay. Base [range], on-target earnings [range] at a [split] split, variable paid on [team quota or individual deals], travel [share of time].

Fifteen US jurisdictions require a pay range in the posting itself; the guide Which sales jobs show their pay lists them.

The guide How to hire a sales engineer covers the rest of the hire: what the offer has to beat, where sales engineers come from, the pay plan and a technical interview loop.

6. How these figures were counted

  • The roles: every open sales engineering role on this board on 2 November 2026 open to US candidates, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 1,690 roles.
  • The requirements: the leading requirement lines read from 359 of those postings (about three lines each); a requirement counts when a line names it.
  • The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged, and the median across the US postings. "Up to" figures are left out.
