Sales engineer salary: what solutions engineer postings pay, and why most of it is base
Written by Yuma Heymans, Founder & CEO of SalesJobs.Now.

A US sales engineer job posting on this board typically pays $187,500 a year, more than any other common sales seat below management, and the middle half of postings run from $145,700 to $233,600. Sales engineers (also called solutions engineers, solutions consultants or pre-sales engineers) are paid for technical depth, so the product matters even more than for account executives: cloud and AI companies post the most. This guide breaks sales engineer pay down by product, segment, city and company, and explains why so little of it is commission.
On 1 November 2026 this board had 1,890 open sales engineering roles that US candidates could take, and 1,454 of them (77%) stated their pay, a higher share than any other kind of sales seat. Every figure below is the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the postings in each group. Right now the board's sales engineering roles post a median of $188k/yr, with a typical band of $148k/yr to $301k/yr, across 4,191 open roles in every country.

1. The short answer
| Measure, US sales engineering roles, 1 Nov 2026 | Posted pay per year |
|---|---|
| Median | $187,500 |
| Middle half of postings | $145,700 to $233,600 |
| Bottom tenth below | $113,400 |
| Top tenth above | $260,200 |
| At a cloud company (median) | $219,500 |
| Enterprise sales engineer (median) | $210,000 |
The range is tighter than for account executives. A sales engineer's pay rests on a large base salary with a smaller variable on top, and the seat is almost always at a technology company, so there are few of the low-paid field and inside roles that pull the account executive median down. For comparison, US account executive postings post a median of $125,000; the guide Account executive salary breaks that seat down the same way.
2. Pay by what the company sells
Cloud infrastructure and AI companies post the most because their products are the hardest to evaluate: a buyer's engineers want to see the platform run on their own data, and the sales engineer is the person who makes that happen. AI and data companies also post the most sales engineering roles of any market on the board (382 US roles posting pay that day). Vertical SaaS seats, which sell software built for one industry, ask for more knowledge of that industry and less deep engineering, and post less. The tech and software sales jobs page lists every seat at these companies.
3. Pay by segment and seniority
| Seat | US roles posting pay | Median posted pay |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise sales engineer | 134 | $210,000 |
| Senior or principal (no segment named) | 446 | $191,300 |
| Sales engineer (no level named) | 957 | $183,000 |
| Mid-market sales engineer | 73 | $138,800 |
Enterprise sales engineers support the largest deals, often several account executives at once, and run long technical evaluations with the buyer's architects and security teams. A senior title adds less than in closing seats, because most sales engineers are hired with years of engineering or consulting already behind them. Few postings are for juniors: associate or entry-level sales engineering seats were under 2% of the US roles posting pay, at a median of about $97,000.
4. Pay by city
Among US sales engineering roles posting pay, by the metro the posting names:
| Metro | Roles posting pay | Median posted pay |
|---|---|---|
| San Francisco Bay Area | 242 | $215,000 |
| New York | 212 | $200,000 |
| Chicago | 60 | $194,100 |
| Washington DC | 70 | $187,500 |
| Boston | 51 | $176,750 |
| Denver | 40 | $136,100 |
Remote and office seats pay the same: a median of $187,500 for the 488 remote US roles posting pay and $187,000 for the 966 others. Washington DC has the highest share of sales engineering seats of any city on the board (one in seven of its sales roles), most of them supporting sellers to federal agencies, where an active security clearance can be a requirement; the Washington DC sales jobs page counts how many of its roles ask for one.
5. The companies that post the highest pay
The employers whose US sales engineering postings had the highest median pay on 1 November 2026, among those with at least eight roles posting pay:
| Company | Roles posting pay | Median posted pay |
|---|---|---|
| Sierra | 12 | $285,000 |
| Harvey | 24 | $270,000 |
| Cloudflare | 14 | $263,000 |
| Harness | 10 | $255,000 |
| Hewlett Packard Enterprise | 64 | $253,250 |
| OpenAI | 12 | $247,000 |
| Palo Alto Networks | 35 | $245,100 |
| Cisco | 27 | $242,100 |
| NVIDIA | 45 | $235,750 |
| Ramp | 12 | $235,600 |
The companies posting the most sales engineering roles were Esri (76 roles posting pay, median $130,400), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (64), Databricks (57, median $213,750) and NVIDIA (45). Each company page lists its open sales roles with their pay.
6. Why a sales engineer's pay is mostly salary
A sales engineer influences many deals without owning any of them, so compensation designers put less of the pay at risk than for a closer. The PreSales Collective names 80/20 as the most common base-to-variable ratio for sales engineers, with some teams at 70/30 or 90/10 - PreSales Collective. At 80/20, a seat posting $187,500 on-target earnings pays a base of about $150,000, against roughly half of OTE for an account executive.
The variable is usually tied to the team's or region's bookings rather than to deals the engineer closes alone, sometimes with a bonus for technical wins. That makes the pay steadier than a closer's but caps the upside: a sales engineer rarely earns double their OTE in a strong year, which an account executive on accelerators can. The guide What is OTE explains pay mixes and payout curves for every kind of sales seat.
7. How to judge an offer
- Ask what the variable is paid on. Your own account executives' quota, a region's, or the whole company's bookings: the narrower the measure, the more your work moves it.
- Ask how many account executives you support. One to one is a different job from one to five, and the variable on five quotas can be easier or harder to earn depending on how the region performs.
- Ask about the technical evaluation load. How many proofs of concept a quarter, and whether there is a separate team for them, decides your hours more than the title does.
- Compare with the right group. Put an offer next to postings for the same product and segment: $180,000 at a vertical SaaS company is above its group's median, the same figure at a cloud company is below it.
- Check the equity. At private AI and infrastructure companies, stock can be a large share of the pay; ask how it vests and how the last round priced it.
8. How these figures were counted
- The roles: every open sales engineering role on this board on 1 November 2026 that a US candidate could take, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 1,890 roles, 1,454 of them stating pay. The board sorts roles by what the job does, so solutions engineers, solutions consultants and pre-sales engineers count here.
- The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range, base or OTE as the posting states it, on a full year's scale, and the median across the roles in each group. A group is shown when at least 30 roles in it post pay; a company when at least eight do.
- Products come from what the employer sells, segments and levels from the title, and cities from the posted location, the same rules the board's market and city pages use.
These figures describe one day; the board's pages always show the current pay.
9. Quick answers
How much do sales engineers make? On this board, US sales engineering postings pay a median of $187,500 a year, with the middle half between $145,700 and $233,600 (1 November 2026).
Do sales engineers make more than account executives? At the median of what postings state, yes: $187,500 against $125,000. Top account executives can out-earn sales engineers in a strong year because more of their pay is commission.
Which sales engineer jobs pay the most? Seats at cloud and AI companies (medians of $219,500 and $210,350) and enterprise seats in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York.
What is a normal base for a sales engineer? About 80% of OTE at the most common split: roughly $150,000 base on a $187,500 OTE.
Where can I see sales engineer roles with their pay? The sales engineering roles page lists every open one with the pay it posts, and the sales engineering guide explains the job.
