Sales engineer vs account executive: what each does in a deal, what each pays and how

A sales engineer and an account executive work the same deals from two sides: the account executive owns the relationship, the forecast and the close, the sales engineer owns the technical proof that the product does what the customer needs. On this board, US sales engineering postings state a median of $187,500 a year and account executive postings $125,000, but the gap is mostly about where each seat is: 78% of sales engineering roles are at software companies against 45% of account executive roles. Within the same industry the two post close to the same pay, with very different splits between salary and commission.
On 1 November 2026 this board had 4,225 open sales engineering roles and 16,862 open account executive roles. Of those open to US candidates, 1,454 sales engineering and 6,065 account executive postings stated pay. Every figure is the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, base or on-target earnings as the posting states it, and the median across the postings in each group.

1. The short answer
| Sales engineer | Account executive | |
|---|---|---|
| Owns | The technical win: discovery of the customer's systems, demonstrations, proofs of concept, security and architecture answers | The deal: pipeline, relationships, pricing, the forecast and the close |
| US median posted pay | $187,500 | $125,000 |
| Usual split, base to variable | About 80 : 20 | About 53 : 47 at the median |
| Share at software companies | 78% | 45% |
| Share of US seats posted as remote | 32% | 22% |
| Typical background | Engineering, consulting, systems administration | Sales development, other closing seats |
The splits are from PreSales Collective for sales engineers and The Bridge Group for account executives.
2. What each seat does in a deal
- Discovery. The account executive qualifies the opportunity (budget, timing, who decides); the sales engineer learns the customer's systems and the technical problem.
- The demonstration. The sales engineer builds and runs it on the customer's own use case; the account executive frames why it matters to the buyer's business.
- The evaluation. The sales engineer runs the proof of concept and answers the security review; the account executive manages its timing, its success criteria and the people deciding.
- The close. The account executive negotiates price and terms; the sales engineer confirms the technical scope written into the contract.
A sales engineer often supports several account executives, so the seat sees many deals at once; the account executive goes deeper on fewer.
3. Pay, compared by what the company sells
| What the company sells | Sales engineer, US median | Account executive, US median |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud and developer tools | $219,500 | $200,000 |
| AI and data | $210,350 | $204,750 |
| Cybersecurity | $189,031 | $176,500 |
| Business software | $184,375 | $167,750 |
| Fintech | $176,000 | $147,500 |
| Industry software | $156,375 | $160,000 |
| Industrial and distribution | $112,500 | $79,000 |
Within software the two seats post within about $30,000 of each other, sometimes with the account executive ahead; the overall gap comes from the many account executive seats in distribution, equipment and consumer goods, where pay is lower and sales engineers are few. The guides Sales engineer salary and Account executive salary break each seat down further.
4. How each is paid
A sales engineer's pay is mostly salary, with a variable part often paid on the team's or the region's results, so it moves little between a good and a bad year. An account executive's on-target earnings are about half variable, paid on the deals they close, so actual pay can land well above or below the posted figure. A candidate weighing the two should compare the base salaries as well as the on-target figures.
5. Moving between the two
- Account executive to sales engineer happens less often, and suits sellers with a technical background who prefer the product to the negotiation.
- Sales engineer to account executive is a route for sales engineers who want a larger variable and their own number; their technical credibility helps with technical buyers.
- Engineer to sales engineer is the usual way into sales engineering; the guide How to get into tech sales covers both routes in.
6. How these figures were counted
- The roles: every open role on this board on 1 November 2026 sorted into sales engineering or account executive by what the job does, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour. What the company sells comes from the company.
- The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the US roles in each group.
