A US vice president of sales posting on this board typically pays $239,500 a year, with the middle half of postings between $196,500 and $337,500 and the top tenth above $450,000. The spread is wide because the title covers very different seats: a regional vice president who carries one region's number, a VP of partnerships, and the head of an entire sales organization at a software company. What the company sells moves the figure most, from $337,185 at cloud and developer tools companies to $172,500 at business services firms. This guide breaks VP of sales pay down by kind of seat, industry and city, explains how the package is built, and says what to ask.
On 1 November 2026 this board had 272 open roles titled vice president (or SVP, AVP, chief revenue officer) of sales, revenue, business development, partnerships or channel, 204 of them open to US candidates, and 118 of those (58%) stated their pay. Every figure below is the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale (base or on-target earnings, as the posting states it), and the median across the postings in each group. Groups are small at this level, so read each median with its count. Sales operations, enablement and marketing vice presidents are left out.

1. The short answer
| Measure, US VP of sales roles, 1 Nov 2026 | Posted pay per year |
|---|---|
| Median | $239,500 |
| Middle half of postings | $196,500 to $337,500 |
| Bottom tenth below | $158,750 |
| Top tenth above | $450,000 |
| Roles posted as remote | 78 of 204 (38%) |
For the levels below, the guides Sales director salary and Sales manager salary use the same method.
2. Pay by kind of VP seat
| Kind of seat (title names) | US roles posting pay | Median | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|
| VP of enterprise or strategic sales | 6 | $422,368 | $257,863 to $450,000 |
| VP of business development | 7 | $270,000 | $225,000 to $288,000 |
| VP of partnerships, channel or alliances | 24 | $248,036 | $200,000 to $285,750 |
| VP of sales, no segment named | 49 | $230,000 | $196,500 to $368,935 |
| Regional vice president | 26 | $213,125 | $142,500 to $305,000 |
- Regional vice presidents usually lead the sellers of one region (a part of the US, or EMEA or Asia Pacific) and answer to a national or global sales leader; at some companies the title is a senior seller's carrying a large personal number.
- VPs of sales with no segment named range from the first sales leader at a startup to the head of a business unit at a large company, which is why their middle half spans more than $170,000.
- Partnerships and channel VPs lead the teams that sell through resellers, consultancies and cloud marketplaces; the guide Partner and channel sales salary covers the seats below them.
The chief revenue officer and chief sales officer postings that stated pay that day were all from one employer, so they are not a market figure.
3. Pay by what the company sells
| What the company sells | US roles posting pay | Median | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud and developer tools | 9 | $337,185 | $321,858 to $458,150 |
| Business software | 15 | $305,000 | $260,000 to $360,000 |
| Cybersecurity | 10 | $250,863 | $230,000 to $316,350 |
| Fintech | 11 | $250,000 | $175,000 to $285,750 |
| Advertising, media and marketplaces | 21 | $217,500 | $196,500 to $242,350 |
| Industry software | 30 | $215,000 | $160,000 to $392,500 |
| Business and information services | 8 | $172,500 | $155,750 to $224,100 |
As for every sales seat, software companies post the most; the guide Tech sales salary compares the markets across seats.
4. Pay by city
| Metro | US roles posting pay | Median |
|---|---|---|
| San Francisco Bay Area | 11 | $360,000 |
| New York | 23 | $235,500 |
| Boston | 6 | $206,250 |
| Washington DC | 7 | $196,500 |
Many VP seats are remote or cover a region rather than a city, so the city matters less at this level than the company and the scope of the job.
5. Who is hiring
The companies with the most open VP-level sales roles in every country on 1 November 2026 were Third Bridge (9), ParetoHealth (8), Human Agency and Giga (7 each), iHeartMedia (7), Garner Health, Mastercard, Salesforce and Veeva (6 each) and Entrata (5). Among companies with at least three priced US roles, Garner Health posted the highest median ($392,500).
6. How a VP of sales package is built
- Base and variable. Most VP of sales packages combine a base salary with a variable part paid on the organization's or region's revenue against plan; postings state either the base range or the on-target total, so check which before comparing two offers.
- Equity. At private companies, an equity grant is usually a large part of the package and is never in the posted range; ask for the number of shares or units, the vesting schedule and the latest valuation.
- Scope. The number a VP carries, the size of the team and whether the seat owns sales development, sales engineering or customer success all change what the role is worth.
7. What to ask before accepting
- What is the number, how was it set, and what share of it did the team reach last year?
- Who reports to you, how many seats are open, and how much of the team will you hire?
- Who do you report to: the chief executive, a chief revenue officer, or a regional leader?
- How is the variable paid: quarterly or annually, on bookings or revenue, with or without a floor?
8. How these figures were counted
- The roles: every open role on this board on 1 November 2026 whose title names a vice president, senior or assistant vice president, or chief revenue or sales officer, of sales, revenue, business development, partnerships, channel or alliances, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 272 roles, 204 of them open to US candidates and 118 of those stating pay.
- The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the US roles in each group. What the company sells comes from the company; the city from the posted location.
These figures describe one day; the sales leadership page lists the leadership seats open now.
