Tech sales salary: what sales seats at software, AI and cloud companies pay, and why

A US sales job posting at a technology company on this board typically pays $170,000 a year, against $105,000 at every other kind of company. The gap is small at the first seat and large after it: sales development reps at tech companies post about the same as anywhere else, while tech account executives post nearly twice what account executives elsewhere do. This guide breaks tech sales pay down by seat and by product, and shows where the premium comes from.
On 1 November 2026 this board had 10,424 open sales roles at technology companies that US candidates could take, and 7,803 of them (75%) stated their pay. A technology company here is one whose product is software for business teams or for one industry, security, AI and data, cloud and developer tools, or financial technology; the tech and software sales jobs page lists every open seat at them. Every figure below is the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the postings in each group.

1. The short answer
| Measure, US sales roles, 1 Nov 2026 | Technology companies | Every other company |
|---|---|---|
| Median posted pay | $170,000 | $105,000 |
| Middle half of postings | $126,700 to $229,000 | |
| Roles posting pay | 7,803 (75%) | 5,848 |
Many tech sales postings state on-target earnings: base plus commission at 100% of quota, which for account executives The Bridge Group found split about half and half (53:47 at the median) - The Bridge Group. The guide What is OTE explains the split for each seat.
2. Pay by seat, tech against everywhere else
| Seat | Tech companies, roles posting pay | Tech median | Elsewhere median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales leadership | 738 | $220,000 | $167,500 |
| Sales engineering | 1,273 | $193,500 | $132,100 |
| Partner and channel sales | 575 | $191,100 | $133,000 |
| Account executive | 2,897 | $167,750 | $90,000 |
| Revenue operations | 581 | $165,000 | $136,800 |
| Account management | 491 | $153,100 | $125,000 |
| Customer success | 671 | $147,600 | $107,500 |
| Sales development (SDR, BDR) | 521 | $76,500 | $72,250 |
Two things stand out. The first seat pays about the same everywhere: a tech SDR posts $76,500 at the median against $72,250 elsewhere, because the seat is paid for activity, not for the size of the deals. The premium arrives with the first closing seat: a tech account executive posts $167,750 at the median, nearly double the $90,000 of account executive seats at distributors, equipment, consumer goods and other companies, and the gap holds for engineering, partner and leadership seats. The salary guides for each seat break the figures down further: account executive, sales engineer, SDR, account manager, customer success manager and sales manager.
3. Pay by product
AI and data companies (1,407 US roles posting pay) and cloud and developer tools companies (1,028) post the most; vertical SaaS companies, which sell software built for one industry such as restaurants or construction, post the least of the six but still well above companies outside technology. Each product has its own page with its open seats and today's pay.
4. Why tech sales pays more
Four features of the business help explain the gap:
- Large contracts with high margins. A software contract can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, with little cost to deliver each extra customer, so a company can pay its sellers a larger share of what they bring in.
- Recurring revenue. A customer won in software usually renews year after year, so each new customer is worth several years of revenue, and the seller who wins it is paid accordingly.
- Competition for proven sellers. Fast-growing AI, cloud and security companies hire experienced closers and engineers, often from each other.
- Equity on top. Many tech companies add stock to the cash figure the posting states, so the total can be higher still.
A likely reason the first seat pays about the same everywhere: a sales development rep is paid for meetings and pipeline, not for a share of the deals, and the premium starts when a seat carries a quota of its own.
5. How to read a tech sales offer
- Ask for the split and the quota. At a typical 50:50 split, half of a $170,000 OTE is earned only at quota; a quota several times the OTE is normal for a closing seat, but ask how many reps reached it last year.
- Compare with the right group. Use the seat and the product: $150,000 is close to the median for a fintech account executive ($147,500) and well below it for one at an AI company ($204,750).
- Value the equity honestly. Ask how it vests, what the last funding round priced it at and whether you can sell it before the company goes public.
- Check the territory or book. An inherited set of accounts or a strong inbound flow earns commission sooner than a new territory.
The sales salary calculator shows what an OTE pays at your attainment, and Highest-paying sales jobs ranks the best-paid seats on the board.
6. How these figures were counted
- The roles: every open sales role on this board on 1 November 2026 that a US candidate could take, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 10,424 at technology companies (7,803 posting pay) and the rest at other companies (5,848 posting pay). A company counts as technology by what it sells, the same rule as the tech and software sales jobs page.
- The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the roles in each group. One employer whose postings state a monthly figure the board read as a yearly one is left out.
These figures describe one day; the board's pages always show the current pay.
