A US sales leadership job posting on this board typically pays $189,400 a year, and the middle half of postings run from $145,000 to $250,000. Within that, pay climbs by level: a sales manager posting pays $165,000 at the median, a sales director $201,600, a vice president of sales $239,000 and a head of sales at a growing company $280,000. This guide breaks sales manager and director pay down by level, product, city and company, and explains how a leader's variable pay is earned on the team's number.

On 1 November 2026 this board had 2,240 open sales leadership roles that US candidates could take, and 1,394 of them (62%) stated their pay. Every figure below is the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the postings in each group. Right now the board's sales leadership roles post a median of $198k/yr, with a typical band of $150k/yr to $400k/yr, across 4,241 open roles in every country.

1. The short answer

Measure, US sales leadership roles, 1 Nov 2026Posted pay per year
Median$189,400
Middle half of postings$145,000 to $250,000
Bottom tenth below$103,000
Top tenth above$350,000
Sales manager (median)$165,000
Vice president of sales (median)$239,000

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median annual wage of sales managers at $148,270 in May 2025, counting every industry and every size of company - U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Postings on this board run higher because they lean toward technology and life sciences companies and toward the on-target figure, which includes the variable pay at 100% of the team's target.

2. Pay by level

Level in the titleUS roles posting payMedian posted pay
Head of sales50$280,000
Senior director35$241,250
Vice president109$239,000
Senior manager57$205,000
Director365$201,550
Sales manager477$165,000
Regional, area or district manager187$150,000

Two patterns stand out. First, a head of sales posts more than a vice president at the median; many of those seats are the first sales leader at a growing company, often with equity on top of the posted pay. Second, regional, area and district managers post less than other managers: most of those seats lead field teams at medical device, industrial and logistics, security and consumer goods companies, where the whole pay scale is lower. The most common titles that day were District Sales Manager, Regional Sales Director, Regional Sales Manager, Sales Manager and Director of Sales.

3. Pay by what the company sells

AI and data companies post their sales leaders a median of $312,500, about $75,000 above the next market, a gap wider than for any other kind of seat on the board. Consumer goods sales leadership, much of it regional and district management of field teams, posts the least.

4. Pay by city

Among US sales leadership roles posting pay, by the metro the posting names:

MetroRoles posting payMedian posted pay
San Francisco Bay Area180$265,000
Washington DC55$222,000
Boston37$215,000
New York241$213,000
Austin31$212,000
Chicago55$201,000
Los Angeles60$181,600
Denver33$165,000

Remote leadership roles post slightly more than office ones: a median of $197,500 for the 366 remote US roles posting pay against $187,500 for the rest.

5. The companies that post the highest pay

The employers whose US sales leadership postings had the highest median pay on 1 November 2026, among those with at least eight roles posting pay:

NVIDIA10$306,300
Navan11$284,400
Salesforce12$267,600
Ramp12$257,000

The companies posting the most leadership roles with pay were Amgen (29, median $220,600) and SpaceX (27, $167,500). Every company page lists its open sales roles with their pay.

6. How a sales leader is paid

A sales leader's variable pay is earned on the team's number, not their own deals: usually the bookings or revenue of the team or region against its quota, sometimes with measures for the team's pipeline, retention or how many reps reach quota. Some plans pay a front-line manager a share of each rep's attainment (an "override"), while directors and vice presidents are more often paid on the region's or the company's total. The split between base and variable varies more for leaders than for reps, so ask for it in writing with the measures behind the variable.

That has two consequences worth knowing before you take a seat. Your pay depends on hiring and keeping good reps, so the open headcount you inherit and the time it takes to fill it matter as much as the quota. And the quota is often set before you arrive, so ask how it compares with what the team delivered last year. The guide What is OTE explains plan mechanics, and Sales career path shows how sellers move into leadership.

7. How to judge an offer

  • Ask what the team delivered last year against its quota, and how this year's quota compares. A large increase on a team that missed is a warning.
  • Ask about headcount. How many reps you have, how many seats are open, how long the last hires took, and whether you can hire before the quota counts them.
  • Ask how the variable is measured. Team bookings, overrides on each rep, or company results, and whether it is paid quarterly or annually.
  • Compare by level and product. A $200,000 package is above the median for a sales manager and at the median for a director; at an AI company, both are below their group.
  • Check the equity at startups. For heads of sales and first sales leaders, stock is often the largest part of the upside: ask how it vests and what the last round priced it at.

8. How these figures were counted

  • The roles: every open sales leadership role on this board on 1 November 2026 that a US candidate could take, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 2,240 roles, 1,394 of them stating pay. Sales managers, district and regional managers, directors, heads of sales and vice presidents of sales all count here.
  • The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range, base or OTE as the posting states it, on a full year's scale, and the median across the roles in each group. A group is shown when at least 30 roles in it post pay; a company when at least eight do. Levels come from the title's words (a title naming two levels counts at the higher one).
  • Products come from what the employer sells and cities from the posted location, the same rules the board's market and city pages use. One employer whose postings state a monthly figure the board read as a yearly one is left out.

These figures describe one day; the board's pages always show the current pay.
