The highest-paying sales jobs on this board are leadership and technical seats at AI, cloud and security companies, enterprise closing seats, and specialty seats at drug makers. A vice president of sales posts a median of $239,000 a year, a sales engineer at a cloud company $219,500, an enterprise account executive $185,600, and a pharmaceutical district manager $203,740. This guide ranks the best-paid sales seats by what US postings actually state, shows which companies post the most, and explains what makes a seat pay.

Every figure below comes from the open sales roles on this board on 1 November 2026 that US candidates could take and that state their pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the postings in each group. Most figures are on-target earnings (base plus commission at 100% of quota) as the posting states them; drug and device postings usually state the base salary alone. Right now the board's sales roles post a typical band of $95k/yr to $305k/yr across 37,819 open roles.

1. The ranking

The best-paid kinds of sales seat by median posted pay, among groups with at least 30 US roles posting pay:

RankSeatUS roles posting payMedian posted pay
1Sales leadership at an AI or data company127$312,500
2Head of sales50$280,000
3Senior sales director35$241,250
4Vice president of sales109$239,000
5Sales engineer at a cloud company257$219,500
6Sales engineer at an AI or data company382$210,350
7Enterprise sales engineer134$210,000
8Account executive at an AI or data company400$204,750
9Pharmaceutical district or regional sales manager71$203,740
10Sales director365$201,550
11Account manager at a cloud company93$200,000
12Account executive at a cloud company331$200,000
13Customer success at an AI or data company86$196,800
14Enterprise account executive1,045$185,600
15Strategic or major account executive358$182,000

For comparison, the median across the main kinds of US sales seat: sales engineers $187,500, sales leadership $189,400, account management $135,200, customer success $141,500, account executives $125,000 and sales development reps $76,100. Each seat has its own salary guide: account executive, sales engineer, sales manager and director, account manager, customer success manager, SDR, and for the medical markets pharmaceutical and medical device sales.

2. Why these seats pay the most

Four things lift a sales seat's pay, and the seats at the top of the ranking have several of them at once.

  • The size of each sale. A seat that closes a few six- or seven-figure contracts a year pays more than one that closes many small ones, because its quota and commission scale with the deal. That is why enterprise and strategic titles pay about $60,000 more than account executive titles that name no segment.
  • What the company sells. AI, cloud and security companies post the highest medians in every kind of seat: leadership, closing, technical and customer success alike. Their contracts are large and their markets are growing, so each seller's deals are worth more. The tech and software sales jobs page groups their open seats.
  • Technical depth. Sales engineers are paid for knowing the product as well as the buyer's engineers do, and they post more than account executives at the median, with most of it as salary.
  • Responsibility for a team's number. Directors, vice presidents and heads of sales are paid on the revenue of everyone under them, and the first sales leader at a growing company often gets equity on top.

Specialty pharmaceutical seats reach the ranking too: drug makers fill them with experienced sellers, and they post the salary alone, with a bonus on top.

3. The companies with the highest posted pay

Among companies with at least eight US roles posting pay in the seat, the highest medians on 1 November 2026:

SeatCompanyMedian posted pay
Sales leadershipAnthropic$575,000
Account executiveAnthropic$415,000
Account executiveVeeam$405,900
Sales leadershipCisco$387,650
Account executiveKong$360,000
Sales leadershipHarvey$345,000
Account executiveOkta$342,000
Account managerHewlett Packard Enterprise$331,750
Sales engineerSierra$285,000
Sales engineerHarvey$270,000

These are mostly on-target figures for enterprise and senior seats. The companies ranked by pay page ranks every employer on the board by what its roles post, and each company page lists its open sales roles with their pay.

4. The highest-paying cities

Across US account executive roles, the most common sales seat, the San Francisco Bay Area posts a median of $190,000, Washington DC $175,000, New York and Austin $160,000 and Chicago $145,900; sales leadership in the Bay Area posts $265,000. The order follows where AI, security and enterprise software companies keep their teams. The San Francisco, Washington DC and New York pages list each city's open seats with their pay, and Best cities for sales jobs compares 21 metros.

5. How to get into a high-paying sales seat

The best-paid seats are rarely first jobs. The usual route runs through a closing seat:

  1. Start where the product is valuable. A sales development seat at an AI, cloud or security company pays more than one elsewhere ($95,000 at the median at AI companies against $76,100 for the seat as a whole) and leads to closing seats in the best-paid markets. The guide How to get into tech sales covers the way in.
  2. Move up the segments. SMB, then mid-market, then enterprise account executive, each with a larger quota and a larger median ($129,800, $147,750, $185,600).
  3. Or go technical. Engineers and consultants can move straight into sales engineering, which pays $187,500 at the median without carrying a personal quota.
  4. Lead a team. Front-line managers post $165,000, directors $201,550 and vice presidents $239,000.

The guide Sales career path maps the whole ladder with how long each step usually takes.

6. What a high posted figure does not tell you

  • OTE is a target, not a promise. The variable part is paid only at quota. Ask how many reps reached quota last year.
  • The quota decides what you earn. A $300,000 OTE with a quota few people reach can pay less than a $200,000 one most people beat. The guide What is OTE shows how to check a plan.
  • Equity is not in the figure. At private AI and infrastructure companies, stock can be worth more than the posted pay, or nothing; ask how it vests.
  • The base is the floor. For drug and device seats, the posted figure is usually the salary, and the bonus or commission comes on top.

7. How these figures were counted

  • The roles: every open sales role on this board on 1 November 2026 that a US candidate could take and that stated pay, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour. The board sorts each role by what the job does (sales development, account executive, account management, customer success, sales engineering, sales leadership), by what its employer sells, and by the segment and level its title names.
  • The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the roles in each group. A group is ranked when at least 30 roles in it post pay; a company when at least eight do.
  • Left out: postings whose stated period the board misread (a monthly figure read as a yearly one) and one company whose roles in a group were mostly not sales jobs.

These figures describe one day; the board's pages always show the current pay.
