How to get into cybersecurity sales: the work, who hires, what each seat pays and the ways in

Cybersecurity sales is one of the best-paid and most remote-friendly corners of sales: US postings at security companies on this board pay a median of $176,500 a year, enterprise account executives $225,000, and 43% of the seats can be done remotely. It is also one of the more technical, because the buyers are security teams who test what they buy. This guide covers what the work is, who hires, what each seat pays and the realistic ways in.
On 1 November 2026 this board had 3,065 open sales roles at 123 companies that sell security products, 1,504 of them open to US candidates, and 1,048 of those stated their pay. Every figure below is the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the postings in each group. The cybersecurity sales jobs page lists every open seat with today's pay.

1. What cybersecurity sales is
Security companies sell products that protect a business: its laptops and servers (endpoint security), its network and cloud traffic, the identities and passwords of its people, its data and backups, and in some cases its buildings (cameras and access control). The buyer is usually a chief information security officer (CISO) and the security team, with IT, legal, procurement and often the board involved in larger deals.
The work follows the shape of enterprise software sales: an SDR books the first meeting, an account executive runs the deal, a sales engineer proves the product in a technical evaluation, and partners (resellers, managed security providers, cloud marketplaces) take part in many deals. What differs is the buyer: security teams are technical, skeptical of claims and often run a proof of concept against two or three competitors before choosing.
2. Who hires
The security companies with the most open sales roles on 1 November 2026 (every country):
| Company | Open sales roles | What it sells |
|---|---|---|
| Palo Alto Networks | 419 | Network, cloud and security operations platforms |
| Zscaler | 140 | Cloud network security |
| Verkada | 120 | Cameras and building security |
| Check Point | 108 | Network and cloud security |
| AvePoint | 104 | Data protection and governance |
| Okta | 97 | Identity |
| CrowdStrike | 93 | Endpoint and cloud security |
| SentinelOne | 86 | Endpoint and security operations |
| Veeam | 75 | Backup and recovery |
| Horizon3.ai | 75 | Autonomous penetration testing |
| Netskope | 68 | Cloud network security |
| Rubrik | 65 | Data security and recovery |
The market runs from the largest platform companies to fast-growing specialists such as Horizon3.ai and Netskope.
3. What each seat pays
Median posted pay of US roles at security companies, by kind of seat:
| Seat | US roles | Median posted pay |
|---|---|---|
| Sales leadership | 168 | $229,000 |
| Partner and channel sales | 117 | $195,375 |
| Sales engineering | 291 | $189,031 |
| Account executive | 534 | $176,500 |
| Revenue operations | 99 | $158,250 |
| Account management | 73 | $155,000 |
| Customer success | 113 | $145,000 |
| Sales development (SDR, BDR) | 107 | $80,000 |
Account executive titles that say enterprise, strategic or major post a median of $225,000 (234 US roles). Partner and channel seats are many and well paid here: security is commonly sold through resellers and managed security providers. Most of these figures are on-target earnings; the guide What is OTE explains the split, and Tech sales salary compares security with the other software markets.
4. How it differs from other software sales
- Technical buyers. Expect to talk about threats, architectures and how the product fits the customer's other tools. Account executives do not need to be engineers, but the good ones learn enough to run a credible first call.
- Proofs of concept. Many deals hinge on a technical evaluation; the sales engineer runs it, and the account executive manages its timing and success criteria.
- Partners in most deals. Resellers, distributors, managed security providers and cloud marketplaces are part of the sale, which is why partner seats are many and well paid.
- Remote is common. 43% of US security sales seats were posted as remote, the highest share of any product market on the board; the guide Remote sales jobs compares markets.
5. The ways in
- Sales development at a security company. The most common route for people without a sales record: security SDR seats post a median of $80,000 here, above the board's SDR median, and lead to closing seats within one to two years. The guide How to get into tech sales covers the SDR path.
- From another software closing seat. Account executives from SaaS, cloud or data companies move into security regularly; employers look for a record of closing technical deals and the willingness to learn the security vocabulary.
- From security or IT work into sales engineering. Security engineers, analysts and consultants are the natural hires for sales engineering seats, which post a median of $189,000 and value hands-on experience over sales experience.
- From a reseller or managed security provider. People who sold or delivered security at a partner often move to a vendor's partner or channel team.
Whichever door you take, learn the basics first: the main product categories (endpoint, network, cloud, identity, data, security operations), how a security team is organized, and the frameworks buyers use to justify spending. A few public courses and a home lab go a long way in an interview. The guide Sales interview questions covers the interview loop.
6. Public sector and clearances
Selling security to government is its own specialty. On 1 November 2026, 144 US roles at security companies had a title naming federal, public sector, government, state and local, defense or intelligence buyers, posting a median of $208,000. Seats that sell to defense and intelligence agencies often ask for an active security clearance or the ability to obtain one; the public sector sales jobs page counts how many of its open roles ask for one, and the Washington DC sales jobs page lists the seats around the federal market.
7. How these figures were counted
- The roles: every open sales role on this board on 1 November 2026 at a company whose product is security (endpoint, network, cloud, identity, data protection and recovery, physical security), read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 3,065 roles at 123 companies, 1,504 of them open to US candidates and 1,048 of those stating pay.
- The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the US roles in each group. Seats come from what each job does; segment and public sector come from the title's words.
These figures describe one day; the cybersecurity sales jobs page always shows the current seats and pay.
