A US construction sales posting on this board typically pays $89,800 a year, with the middle half of postings between $62,088 and $118,500. What the employer sells moves the figure most: companies that sell and service building systems (heating and cooling, elevators, doors and access) post a median of $97,000, while equipment rental companies and building products distributors post about $54,000 for seats that are mostly outside and inside sales, where commission is commonly paid on top. Construction software companies post the most, $130,600. This guide breaks construction sales pay down by kind of employer, seat and company, and says what to ask about the commission that the posted figures leave out.

On 2 November 2026 this board had 1,593 open sales roles at companies that sell to construction and buildings, 1,126 of them open to US candidates, and 63% of those stated their pay. A role counts by what its employer sells, never its title, so a United Rentals inside sales rep and an Otis account manager both count. Every figure is the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale (base or on-target earnings, as the posting states it), one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged, and the median across the US postings. The construction sales jobs page lists every open seat with today's figures.

  • Building systems companies sell service agreements, equipment and controls to building owners and facility managers, often through technical seats; their postings state pay most often after software, and their figure is closest to what the seat pays.
  • Equipment rental and distribution seats are outside reps who call on contractors at job sites, inside reps who quote and take orders by phone, and counter staff at the branch. Their postings state lower ranges, and these seats commonly add commission on what the rep rents or sells.
  • Contractors spread the widest: hourly in-home sales consultants at one end and roofing territory reps at the other, on 33 priced postings.

3. Pay by kind of seat and title

The trainee row is not a typo: Johnson Controls' technical sales trainee program, the largest on the board for construction (58 US seats that day), posts a higher salary than most outside sales seats at rental companies and distributors, which add commission.

4. Pay by company

Among employers with at least ten US postings that state pay, the medians on 2 November 2026 were:

United Rentals had the most open US construction sales roles (229, most of them inside and outside sales reps), then Johnson Controls (190), Renuity (105), Sunbelt Rentals (94) and Ferguson (85). Renuity's postings that state only what a rep could earn ("up to" a figure) are left out of its median. The HVAC sales jobs page lists the heating, cooling and building controls seats on their own.

5. What the posted figures leave out

Outside sales at a rental company or distributor is commonly paid as a salary plus commission on what the rep rents or sells, and a posted range may show only the salary. A $54,000 posted median for equipment rental is therefore not necessarily what a successful rental rep earns. Before accepting:

  • Ask what reps in the branch earned last year in total, commission included.
  • Ask what the commission is paid on: revenue, gross margin, or new accounts, and whether it is capped.
  • Ask whether the territory comes with accounts, or whether you build it from job-site visits.
  • Ask what comes with the seat: a truck or car allowance, a phone and fuel, since outside reps drive to job sites all day.

The guide What is OTE explains base, variable pay and quota.

6. Getting into construction sales

Construction is one of the most open markets for a first sales job. Rental companies and distributors hire inside and counter reps who learn the products before moving to outside sales, and equipment makers run trainee programs for graduates (Johnson Controls' technical sales trainees, United Rentals' sales development program). Of the US postings whose requirements were read, 26 of 61 named a degree, and those naming years asked for a median of four. People coming from the trades, the military or a job site bring the customer's language with them. The guides Inside sales vs outside sales and How to get into sales cover the first seats.

7. How these figures were counted

  • The roles: every open sales role on this board on 2 November 2026 at a company whose own description names construction, building products or systems, equipment rental, roofing or remodeling, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 1,593 roles, 1,126 of them open to US candidates.
  • The kind of employer: from the same description: software makers, rental companies, distributors and wholesalers, building systems and access companies, contractors and home improvement companies, and makers of building products.
  • The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, one per posting after repeats of the same title at the same company are merged, and the median across the US postings. "Up to" figures are left out.

These figures describe one day; the construction sales jobs page always shows the current roles and pay.
