The US cities with the most sales jobs, what they pay and who is hiring

New York and the San Francisco Bay Area hold more open sales roles than the next eight US cities combined, and the Bay Area pays the most. This guide ranks the US cities with the most open sales jobs, what those jobs post in pay, who is hiring in each, and how remote sales roles compare.
On 1 November 2026, 2,342 open sales roles on this board named New York as a place to work, and 2,038 named the San Francisco Bay Area. Those two metros alone account for about one in five of the 20,596 open sales roles that US candidates could take that day. The Bay Area's roles posted the highest median pay of any large metro, $192,500 a year, against $170,000 in New York.
These are not survey estimates. Every figure below was counted from the open roles this board reads from employers' own careers systems, checked every hour, at 1,480 companies hiring salespeople. A city's count is the number of open roles whose posted location names that city or its metro; the pay is the posted range of each role, on a full year's scale.

The concentration follows the industries that hire the most salespeople on this board. Software companies, and above all AI, data and fintech companies, still put most of their sales teams in New York and the Bay Area, while Chicago, Austin, Denver and Atlanta have grown into second hubs where the same companies open regional offices for mid-market and commercial teams.
Each metro in the table links its own page, which lists every open sales role there with its posted pay, the companies hiring and what the postings ask for, read again every hour. A metro counts a role when its posted location names the city or one of the suburbs its page lists (Cambridge and Waltham for Boston, Plano and Irving for Dallas-Fort Worth). Twenty-one more metros, each with 39 to 109 open sales roles that day, have pages of their own too: Detroit, St. Louis, Tampa, Cleveland, Kansas City, Orlando, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, San Antonio, Columbus, Cincinnati, Las Vegas, Baltimore, Richmond, Milwaukee, Sacramento, Portland, Jacksonville, Boise, Oklahoma City and Louisville.
2. Where sales pay is highest
Three things stand out.
- The Bay Area pays the most, and Washington DC is second. DC's roles lean toward technical and public-sector selling: 14% of them are sales engineering roles, against 11% across the board, and many sell software and security to government agencies, seats that often ask for public-sector experience or a clearance. The board's public sector sales jobs page lists those seats across the country, and the Washington DC sales jobs page the ones in the capital.
- Pay tracks the mix of seats as much as the city. A metro full of enterprise account executive roles posts a higher median than one full of entry-level roles, whatever the local cost of living. In Salt Lake City, for example, 17% of the open roles are sales development seats, nearly three times the board's share of 6%, which pulls its median down.
- Most of these figures are on-target pay. Sales postings usually state on-target earnings (base plus commission at 100% of quota) or a base range; the guide What is OTE explains how to read them.
Pay transparency laws are also why the big coastal metros have so many priced roles. New York City, California, Washington State and Colorado require posted pay ranges, so roles there almost always state one, while many roles in other states do not.
3. Who is hiring in each city
The companies with the most open sales roles in each of the larger metros on 1 November 2026, and the kind of company that dominates the city's sales hiring:
- New York: Anthropic, Stripe, Ramp and Profound lead; business software, fintech and AI companies hold most of the roles.
- San Francisco Bay Area: NVIDIA, Anthropic, Salesforce and Stripe lead; AI and data companies hire more salespeople here than in any other metro.
- Chicago: Stripe, Salesforce, Braze and DoorDash lead, with business software and advertising and marketplace companies strongest.
- Boston: Datadog, ZoomInfo, Veeva and Tulip lead, with a mix of business software, industry software and life sciences.
- Washington DC: Salesforce, Databricks, ZoomInfo and Anduril Industries are among the leaders, many of their roles selling to government.
- Austin: Braze, Navan, Sonar and DoorDash lead, mostly business and industry software.
- Los Angeles: SpaceX, DoorDash, Stryker and Amgen lead, a wider mix of aerospace, medical device and food and beverage companies than the tech hubs.
- Dallas-Fort Worth: Gartner, Qualtrics, Harvey and Red Bull lead, spread across healthcare, industry software and industrial companies.
- Atlanta: Sysco, DoorDash, Global Payments and Salesforce lead, with industry software and fintech strongest.
- Denver: Esri, Datadog, Ibotta and Klaviyo lead.
- Seattle: SpaceX, Anthropic, DoorDash and Stripe lead.
Every company has its own page on this board with its open sales roles and what they pay, and the companies hiring salespeople page lists all of them. To compare whole markets instead of cities, the tech sales jobs, medical sales jobs and sales jobs by industry pages group the same roles by what the employer sells and who it sells to.
4. Remote sales roles: the largest market of all
4,663 open sales roles open to US candidates on 1 November 2026 said they could be done remotely, more than New York and the Bay Area combined, with a median posted pay of $155,000 among those that posted a range. Remote is no longer a perk of a few seats: sales development, account executive, account management and customer success roles are all regularly posted as remote within the United States.
Two caveats apply. "Remote" in sales usually means remote within a country or a territory: a remote account executive covering the Southeast may still need to live there and travel to customers. And field roles such as medical device and outside sales are by nature tied to a territory, even when no office is named. The remote sales jobs page lists the remote roles by kind of work, and the outside sales jobs page the field ones.
5. How to use this when you job-hunt
- If you can move, New York and the Bay Area offer the most choice and the highest pay, and the second hubs (Chicago, Austin, Denver, Atlanta) offer the same employers' regional teams with a lower cost of living.
- If you cannot move, filter by your state and remote, not just your city. Many roles list several cities or a whole region.
- Read the pay against the seat, not the city. Compare an account executive role with other account executive roles; the sales pay report breaks pay down by kind of seat, market and company.
- Set an alert for the cities you want. New roles appear every day; the board's weekly email sends the new openings that match.
6. How these figures were counted
- The roles: every open sales role on this board on 1 November 2026 that a US candidate could take (its posting names the United States or a US location), 20,596 roles from 1,480 companies, each read from the company's own careers system and checked every hour.
- The cities: a role counts in a metro when its posted location names a city in it (New York counts Manhattan, Brooklyn and Jersey City; the Bay Area counts San Francisco, San Jose, Palo Alto and the other peninsula and South Bay cities; and so on). A role that names several cities counts in each, which is why the city counts add up to more than the roles.
- The pay: the midpoint of each role's posted range, put on a full year's scale (an hourly rate times 2,080 hours), and the median of those midpoints across the roles that post a range. A metro's median is shown only when at least 50 of its roles post pay; the chart shows metros with at least 100.
- Remote: a role whose posting says it can be worked remotely.
These figures are a snapshot of one day and will move. The board's live pages always show the current count and pay.
