How to get into AI sales: who is hiring, what each seat pays and the ways in
Written by Yuma Heymans, Founder & CEO of SalesJobs.Now.
Yuma runs SalesJobs. Now out of San Francisco. Recruiting is familiar ground: Yuma also co-founded HeroHunt.ai, a platform that uses AI to find and reach candidates.
AI companies are the best-paying employers of salespeople on this board: their US sales postings pay a median of $196,750 a year, account executives $204,750 and sales leaders $312,500. They are also among the most demanding, because the buyers are still working out what AI can do for them and the seller has to show it. This guide covers who is hiring, what each seat pays, what makes AI sales different and the realistic ways in.
On 1 November 2026 this board had 3,323 open sales roles at 121 companies that sell AI models, AI applications and the data platforms beneath them, 1,772 of them open to US candidates, and 1,407 of those stated their pay. Every figure below is the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the postings in each group. The AI sales jobs page lists every open seat with today's pay.

1. What AI sales is
Three kinds of company sell under the AI label, and the seats differ with them:
- Model and platform companies sell access to large language models and the tools to build on them, mostly to engineering and product teams, usually priced by use.
- AI application companies sell software that does a job with AI (answering customer questions, drafting legal work, searching a company's knowledge), mostly to the business team that owns that job.
- Data platform companies sell the databases, warehouses and pipelines AI runs on, to data and engineering teams.
All three sell to enterprises through account executives, sales engineers and partners, and many are young companies building their first sales teams.
2. Who is hiring
The AI and data companies with the most open sales roles on 1 November 2026 (every country):
| Company | Open sales roles |
|---|---|
| Databricks | 318 |
| Esri | 184 |
| NVIDIA | 136 |
| Harvey | 127 |
| Snowflake | 124 |
| MongoDB | 118 |
| Pure Storage | 117 |
| Anthropic | 114 |
| Elastic | 107 |
| Celonis | 103 |
| OpenAI | 103 |
| AlphaSense | 67 |
| Sierra | 66 |
Data platforms (Databricks, Snowflake, MongoDB, Elastic) hire the most sellers, model companies (Anthropic, OpenAI) each had more than 100 open sales roles, and application companies (Harvey for legal work, Sierra for customer service, AlphaSense for research) are hiring for whole new categories.
3. What each seat pays
Median posted pay of US roles at AI and data companies, by kind of seat:
| Seat | US roles | Median posted pay |
|---|---|---|
| Sales leadership | 173 | $312,500 |
| Sales engineering | 437 | $210,350 |
| Account executive | 528 | $204,750 |
| Partner sales | 143 | $200,000 |
| Customer success | 110 | $196,775 |
| Revenue operations | 140 | $185,000 |
| Account management | 126 | $166,400 |
| Sales development (SDR, BDR) | 103 | $95,000 |
Every seat pays more here than the same seat across the board: sales development reps $95,000 against $76,100 overall, account executives $204,750 against $125,000. The companies with the highest median among those with at least eight US roles posting pay were Anthropic ($335,000), LangChain ($325,000), Uniphore ($309,825), Cohere ($300,000), Glean ($297,500), Sierra ($295,000), ClickHouse ($287,500) and Decagon ($275,000). Most of these figures are on-target earnings; equity at private AI companies comes on top. The guide Tech sales salary compares AI with the other software markets.
4. How AI sales differs
- The buyer is still learning. Many customers are buying AI for the first time. The seller's job is less to beat a competitor's feature list than to find a problem worth solving, prove it in a pilot and turn the pilot into a contract.
- Pilots and usage. Many deals start as a paid or free pilot and grow with usage, so the seat often owns expansion as much as the first sale.
- Technical depth matters. Sales engineers (437 US roles, more than in any other product market on the board) build demonstrations on the customer's own data; account executives need enough fluency to talk to engineering leaders.
- New categories. At application companies the category may not exist in the buyer's budget yet, so sellers create the budget line as well as winning it.
- Fast change. Products, pricing and competitors change month to month; sellers who learn quickly do best.
5. The ways in
- Sales development at an AI company. SDR seats here post a median of $95,000, among the highest of any product market, and lead to closing seats; the competition for them is strong, so show curiosity about the product and a record of hitting goals. The guide How to get into tech sales covers the SDR path.
- From another software closing seat. Account executives from SaaS, cloud, data and security companies are the main hires; employers look for a record of closing technical deals with enterprise buyers.
- From engineering, data or consulting into sales engineering. Engineers and data scientists who like explaining things to customers move into sales engineering and solutions roles, which value hands-on experience over sales experience.
- From customer success. Customer success at AI companies posts a median of $196,775, close to closing seats, and is a way in for people who have implemented software for customers.
Whatever the door, use the products. Build something small with a model's interface, try the applications your target company sells, and be ready to talk about what worked and what did not. The guide Sales interview questions covers the interview loop.
6. Where the seats are
The San Francisco Bay Area held 440 of the 1,772 US AI sales roles that day and New York 330; 523 (30%) were posted as remote. The San Francisco and New York pages list every open sales seat in each city, and Remote sales jobs compares remote seats across markets.
7. How these figures were counted
- The roles: every open sales role on this board on 1 November 2026 at a company whose product is AI models, AI applications or data platforms, read from each company's own careers system and checked every hour: 3,323 roles at 121 companies, 1,772 of them open to US candidates and 1,407 of those stating pay. A company counts here by what it sells, the same rule as the AI sales jobs page.
- The pay: the midpoint of each posting's own range on a full year's scale, and the median across the US roles in each group. A company is named for pay when at least eight of its US roles post it.
These figures describe one day; the AI sales jobs page always shows the current seats and pay.
